$100,000 and over

A 560-point leap in the Baltic Capesize Index was driven by huge demand for Australian cargoes from local miners with rates soaring well above $100,000 a day for the first time in an age.

And the period market was in rude health also as Classic Maritime spent $55,000 a day on a short term deal and other capesizes also reeled in big sums.

But the boom was not just confined to the top asset class as panamaxes surged too, lifted by strong front haul activity and Australian pick-ups.

Capesizes (Index 88.560 USD/dagen)

Dreyfus outfit Cetragpa spent a whopping $112,500 a day for the 179,000-dwt Hanjin Cape Lambert (built 2009) to take a front haul at the end of this month.

BHP Billiton followed up its rush of fixtures already this week by booked a trio for roundtrips from China to Australia. The 175,000-dwt China Venture (built 2005) got $110,000, the 179,900-dwt Five Stars Fujian (built 2009) $106,000 and the 176,300-dwt Houheng Sunrise (built 2003) $105,000.

Rival Australian miner Fortescue spent $85,000 a day for the same itinerary with the 167,100-dwt Aquahope (built 1997).

George Economou?s Classic booked the 171,100-dwt Anangel Dynasty (built 1999) for five to seven months at $55,000 a day.

Swiss Marine has a 177,000-dwt newbuilding out of SWS in the next month or two for on average a month more at $45,000.

Panamaxes (Index 34.890 USD/dagen)

Sino East paid between $47,000 and $49,000 a day for a front haul with the 80,400-dwt Lucky Sunday (built 2009) depending on its route.

There were huge day rates and ballast bonuses for lifts from the Atlantic to the Far East. Dreyfus spent $42,000 a day plus $860,000 for the 76,900-dwt Ascanius (built 2004) to head from Brazil while another charterer has the 71,700-dwt Transgiant (built 1992) from the US Gulf at $44,000 and $880,000.

Hauls from the Persian Gulf to China also attracted massive sums. The 66,500-dwt Kiran Asya (built 1997) got $41,000 and the 64,800-dwt Panamax Anna (built 1982) just $1,000 a day shy.

Norden paid a huge $43,000 a day for a roundtrip from Asia to Australia with the 78,000-dwt Lake Dahlia (built 2009), a similar voyage netting the 74,100-dwt Yong Tai (built 2001) $8,000 a day less.

A run from China to Australia and India set one charterer back $35,000 with the 76,400-dwt Hong Fu (built 2009) while and Asian itinerary cost $34,500 with the 83,000-dwt Manoussos P (built 2008).

The Atlantic wasn?t near as busy but $34,000 from Vitol was still good for a roundtrip from Europe to South America with the 74,800-dwt Alexandra (built 2001).

There was strong short- and long-term activity with Klaveness fixing a 75,000 newbuilding from China this month for two years at $21,250.

At the other end of the scale the 82,900-dwt Yasa Pioneer (built 2006) commanded $31,000 a day for between five and seven months.
